Caddo Lake State Park, Karnack TX

Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s, this beautiful and surprisingly hilly park in east Texas is home to 25,000 acres of slow-flowing wetlands, bayous and backwaters. Most of its “trails” are on the water, but we enjoyed a short but pleasant hike on the Caddo Forest Trail.  If the National Parks are America’s best idea, State Parks are a close 2nd.  Caddo State Park was one of the first (thanks to Lady Bird Johnson’s father), and sparked the creation of many more throughout the country.
