Our drive through West Virginia gave us a good, long look at this “wild and wonderful” state. A quick overnight at Riffle Run, (an Army Corps of Engineers campground – always a good bet, and 1/2 price with the National Park Senior Pass) before we pressed on to Lexington Kentucky, where the “unbridled spirit” is alive and well. Miles and miles and miles and miles of exquisite horse farms cover the landscape, and we camped at the Kentucky Horse Park where we spent a delightful afternoon exploring the museum, barns, and beautiful grounds that honor all things equine, especially the race horse.
One of the highlights was meeting some of the champions of the past, with video snippets of their wins at the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, Belmont, etc. Go for Gin, winner of the 1994 Kentucky Derby, was one of our favorites. Here he is, then and now.
Today we crossed our old friend, the Mississippi River, bringing back fond memories of our Great River Road trip last spring.
